PARRANO, UMBRIA
It seems that no matter how long we've been here there's always someplace new to explore, sometimes places we've never even heard of. Last week we discovered Torre del Colle, just outside of Bevagna, and just a few days later we stopped in Parrano to check out a festa we had seen advertised. We'd been to Parrano before, but never into the centro. There are some caves just outside of Parrano, and the meeting point had been just outside the centro. By the time we'd finished with our cave visit we were wiped out!
We arrived in Parrano just before the festa got underway, so we were able to wander through the streets as everyone was getting set up. I haven't done any research to learn the history of Parrano, but one of the stones set over a doorway has the date 1531 carved into it. I'm sure this little fortified town was one of several in the area, used as lookouts and/or stopover points for travelers.
Isn't this window - and the ironwork - just gorgeous?
I have no idea what this little gated area is, or what all the carvings set into the walls are either!

Great photos Barb-thank you!
It'a a very cute place - just 2 short parallel streets, and a bit off the beaten path for sure!
Thank you, what great pictures. What type of camera do you use? We are going on a New Year's trip to Italy. Is Orvieto a worthwhile trip from Rome, especially in January? It seems like a short train ride. Oh well, when you travel you take whatever weather you get. --- Linda
I just love the iron work, we have some very similar in Citta di Castello. Functional and pretty at the same time. Lovely set of pics.
I normally take pictures with my little Canon SD450 - it's always in my purse and fits in my pocket quite easlity!
Thank Neal! I looked at your blog and really like your wartercolors - but why have you stopped blogging?
Hi Barb,
Your site has kept me connected to Italy for a long time. (We are finally moving to Italy in February) Just wanted to thank you for it. It also inspired me to start a blog to stay in touch with friends and hopefully help keep the dream alive for folks who are between trips. The linK: http://12viacappella.blogspot.com
Congratulations on the move and on the blog! In years to come you'll be so glad you blogged about your experiences!
Lindam YES!, Orvieto is definitely worth a train ride! It takes about an hour from Rome and is one of our favorite cities in all of Italy! In January there won't be any crowds, and the temperature in the caves is the same year-round. there are several small but interesting museums too. GO!!!
