AND THEY'RE OFF!
No, not the horses at Churchill Downs - US! We're leaving in a few days for the vacation of a lifetime - six weeks in Italy followed by a 15 night transatlantic cruise back to the states! We had planned to take a month or two to travel around Italy after we old our house but the timing just didn't work out in the spring so we're doing it now. We'll get to visit with old friends and meet new ones, see familiar places and lots and lots of new places too. We'll be visiting the Cinque Terre, Genoa and Turin, then spending a week up in the Piemonte region. Emilia/Romagna will take up another full week, as will Puglia, and in between we'll be staying in Umbria, our home for so many years. We're so excited, not just to be going back to Italy, but also to be able to visit some of the places we were never able to visit while we lived there.

Barbara and Art, have a wonderful, super time. I know that when you touch down you will feel you are home. Try to update us once in a while--please?

Barb, are you on the NCL from Venice on the 30th? I have about the same trip but 4 weeks home in italy and then the trip by water.

Lee, we're sailing on the Celebrity Equinox out of Rome on Oct 31, so altho we won't won't see each other on board, I'm sure we'll all be having a great time!

I miss your posts about Italy, fixing your house, dealing with locals, partying with them and enjoying their lives and yours. Hope you are able to keep us up to date with your travels.
hi there, this is Liz from Australia, I just found you, my husband and I have just booked a villa for 3 months in Panicale Umbria and was doing a bit of research. We are both retired and a quite excited about this trip any suggestions re the area? Do you know if there is much transport as we didnt want to hire a car for the whole time.

Hi Liz, our friends Greg and Marguerite have a house in Panicale, as does our friend Stew and his wife Midge. Will you be there in the summer? It's quite a lively little village and very popular with expats, so if you don't speak Italian there will be plenty of English speakers around.
I can't imagine not having a car in Umbria - with all the great scenery and tiny villages there's really no way to see and enjoy it all without a car. With bus and train service you're limited to their schedule, and connections can be a problem - sometimes eating up your valuable vacation time.
For people traveling to larger cities - Rome, Florence, even Perugia, Assisi and Orvieto, the train is great, but if you're planning to stay for a while and really explore the area then I would highly recommend a car, altho you could drive to Chiusi or Cortona to take the train into Florence etc for the day.
